Our approach to the compilation of the Ascend Index® is as follows:
The Index starts at 100 in year 1 of the portfolio based on an annual observation of the collective
market values of all the generic types selected for each portfolio. These values are expressed/calculated
under deflated dollar terms.
The generic values matrices for each of the selected types are deflated against a suitable set of control
values (CPI index).
If one aircraft type drops out of the equation (e.g. no more 1980 build A300s are left in service,
meaning there are no values to retrieve) then the portfolio will be rebased historically to reflect just
those types left at the current date.
Each type-based Group is prepresented by one 'generic' aircraft from up to five leading types which were
being built and operated in the category year. e.g. The 1980 Narrowbody portfolio index consists of one
737-200Advanced, one DC-9, one BAe 1-11, one MD-80 and one 727-200Advanced, all of which were the most
populous types built in 1980. The index for this portfolio is therefore derived from the combined 'market'
values of the aircraft that make up the category, in generic value terms. This portfolio is then monitored
annually over time, such that by the year 2000 it reflects the current value of the basket of generic aircraft.
Each operator area-based Group will consists of one generic sample aircraft from each of the five main types
which were built and delivered in the category year to operators in the given geographic area. e.g. The
1990ASIA portfolio index will be based on the values for one generic example of the five most populous types
of aircraft built in 1990 and delivered to Asian operators. The index for this portfolio is therefore derived from
the average market value of the combined group of aircraft that make up the category, in generic value terms.
This portfolio is then monitored annually over time, as per the type based groups.
The individual aircraft types in the groups that make up the Ascend Index® are as follows:
